CBD as an ANTI INFLAMMATORY

What are the scientific facts that tell us CBD plays a major role as an anti inflammatory ?

CBD, but not THC reduces the activity of the NF-B pathway, a primary pathway regulating the expression of pro inflammatory genes. Moreover, CBD, but not THC, up-regulates the activation of the STAT3 transcription factor, an element of homeostatic mechanism(s) inducing anti-inflammatory events. Following CBD treatment, but less so with THC, studies observed a decreased level of mRNA for the Socs3 gene, a main negative regulator of STATs and particularly of STAT3.

Messenger ribonucleic acids (mRNAs) transfer the information from DNA to the cell machinery that makes proteins.

STAT3, which stands for “signal transducer and activators of transcription plays an important role in mediating inflammatory responses by regulating cytokine production.

The term “cytokine” is derived from a combination of two Greek words – “cyto” meaning cell and “kinos” meaning movement. Cytokines are cell signalling molecules that aid cell to cell communication in immune responses and stimulate the movement of cells towards sites of inflammation, infection and trauma.

CB1 and CB2 Receptors

When CBD binds to the CB2 receptors of the overactive immune cells, it will stimulate a certain type of anti-inflammatory protein called the caspase.  When the caspase is activated, it will send a signal that induces the start of the cell death or apoptosis of the immune cell.  With the immune cells dying through caspase activation, the inflammatory process is controlled and production of cytokines is reduced.

CBD can also induce apoptosis by increasing the production reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the immune cells.

A study conducted by GW Booz from the University of Mississipi Medical Center revealed that CBD is useful in reducing the impact of inflammation on oxidative stress, which further decreases the risk of organ dysfunction and damage. Oxidative stress and inflammation also cause many other diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes type 1 and 2, hypertension, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and more.
